Lakshadweep Coral Reefs by Type

The majority of coral reefs in the Lakshadweep Islands are atolls, as shown by the orange color on the legend, which are roughly circular rings surrounding a lagoon. These types of reefs are common in the Indian and South Pacific oceans. While atolls are the clear majority, there are also some patch reefs, as shown by the purple color on the legend. Patch reefs, smaller outcroppings, are mostly found within larger reefs.

Zooming into Coral Reefs by Type

Zooming into a specific reef area, this is the coral reef distribution near Agatti, Bangaram, Kavaratti, and Bitra islands, some of the major islands of Lakshadweep. The majority of reefs here are clearly atolls. The island at the bottom right is Kavaratti, the capital of the Lakshadweep islands. The spaces enclosed by reefs are lagoons, shallow bodies of water.
